Uganda's national bird

This is a grey crowned crane, the national bird of Uganda. Cranes in general are spectacular birds, but the crowned cranes (both grey and black) are stunning even in this excellent league. This one lives in the Abilene Zoo, and was enjoying the early-spring sunshine last Saturday after an unusually cold and moist winter.

Hi. I live in Johannesburg, and I am so happy to see that our Blue Crane has started to re establish itself on the outer limits of suburbia. In fact, a lot of our big birds seem to have decided that city life is great. It's very cool. They're all moving back.

I have just started a bird blog. Maybe you will find it entertaining.

Thanks for the comment. It's been a while since I was in Johannesburg, but I've enjoyed the city several times. Your blog's fun -- thanks for inviting a visit.

Hi Ian:
Thanks for sharing your photos! I live in Galveston, TX USA. Hope that dosen't provoke any prejudices. My wife and I will be visiting Uganda for 20 days starting late June 2010. Th epurpose of this visit is birding and eco-touring. I make photo catalogues of birds our guide services say we may see for quick reference in the field. Would greatly appreciate your permission to use some of the photos in your blog for that purpose.
Phil

Go right ahead -- more than welcome! I lived in South Houston in the early 1980s and have enjoyed visiting Galveston quite a few times. Uganda is a sort of "seventh heaven" for birding. Be sure to include Mabira forest on your route. The Rain Forest Lodge is more expensive than most other places in Uganda to stay, but is simply stunning in beauty, situation, and service, besides being situated inside the primary forest.

All the best!
